Joanne Spears ~ El Cajon, CA
Following graduation I was a secretary at a sheet metal company for awhile. Then I
went to work at a medical laboratory in La Mesa where I drove a little VW around the
county to different doctor’s offices. It was a great job and I had a good time doing it. But
someone sensed that I was happy and I was promoted. That meant working in the office
as a receptionist and running a PBX cord switchboard. I think now the only place you
could find one of those would be in a museum.
Anyway, while at the lab I became interested in the medical field and completed a nurse
aide program. After I saw a severed artery and passed out I decided to switch my focus
to Child Development. So, I attended Grossmont College to attain my degree. By this
time I was volunteering at Bancroft Elementary which eventually turned into an
Instructional Aide position that lasted for 11 years.
Somewhere earlier in this education/career story I got married and served 16.5 years.
Then I took my cat Phoebe and we moved to a little house across from Grossmont High
School. We had a good time while we there. Phoebe lived to be 18 years old; longer
than the marriage had lasted.
In 1984 the skies opened up and angels sang because I met my current husband,
George. He had a house in El Cajon and a cat so the four of us became a family.
I took on the task of heading up the school age program at Children’s World Learning
Center and stayed there for 12 years. Following that I worked at Children’s Hospital in
the Family Violence Program for several years. In 2004 I went to work for an Irvine, Ca.
courier company who needed a courier in San Diego. I love my work which takes me all
over California and I have been to some neat places and met a few famous people too.
The highlight of my life will be on January 27 when I will see all of you. Also, a big cheer
for a brave and committed group who has planned this affair!

Liz Scola ~ Las Vegas, NV
One year after high school, I obtained my cosmetology license. I worked in and around
San Diego in that profession for about ten years. I was also married for a brief time in
my early twenties.
I attended Grossmont College for two years while working for Alpha Beta and Big Bear
markets as a retail clerk.
After living and playing in La Jolla for several years, I traveled to Las Vegas where I met
my husband. We had a long distance relationship for about one year before we made
our final commitment to one another. We have been married for eighteen years.
I went back to my cosmetology profession as a skin care specialist. I had the
opportunity to work and study under the supervision of two plastic surgeons. I now
lease my own space in a beauty salon and am in business for myself as an aesthetician.
I took up tennis at the age of thirty-eight, playing league here in Las Vegas, making
many life long friends. Our team still does well in spite of our bodies not being what they
used to be.
I also took up quilting and hand appliqué, along with other types of stitchery. I have had
the pleasure of entering and showing my work a various local shows. I truly enjoy
creating objects of art in whatever form they take.
My husband Sandor is Hungarian. I have had the experience of traveling to Eastern
Europe several times as we also have a home in Budapest. It is not far from the
Danube River. The last time we were there, we traveled to Italy seeing Venice, Rome,
Pisa, Pompeii and Naples. This Spring we are planning to see Sicily, my ancestral
home. I have done my research and we will visit the towns my family came from. I feel I
truly have a blessed life.
Sorry I cannot make it to the reunion. I will be thinking of all of you.
