After Monte Vista:
I served in the Merchant Marine for one year following graduation and then entered the
United States Army. After fun filled training in the south (Ft. Ord/Ft. Gordon/Ft.
Bragg/Ft. Benning/Ft Polk) I traveled on an all expenses paid trip to Vietnam for three
years where I served as an adviser. In 1970, I returned to the states, enrolled in
Grossmont College to see what I could do with the rest of my life. I became the Campus
Police Chief at Grossmont College, and married Rita, who I'd met in college back in
1966 (best thing that ever happened to me). Earned an Associate Degree in
Criminology, started teaching Aikido and joined the El Cajon P.D. in 1972. Earned a
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Master's Degree in Public Administration
from San Diego State University. Mixed in with that were the births of our five children.
Rita and I were very lucky to have Darren (Lt. Cmdr. US. Navy), Marlie (Engineer -
Northrup Gruman, San Diego), Megan (Attorney - Tucson, Ariz), Dayne (Computer
Game Writer - Los Angeles) and Malia - (Senior St Mary's College, Moraga, CA). We
have three grand children (Darian, Blaze and Allister) and one due soon. Rita designed
and we built a house out just east of El Cajon in 2004 and are pretty well settled in. I
retired from the Police Department in 2005 as the Interim Chief of Police. Rita is a
Catholic School Director and has been good enough to put up with, encourage and
guide me for these past 36 years. I now work for the Viejas Tribal Government Gaming
Commission in Alpine, CA. As a family, we've had our challenges over these past four
decades, but most of them have made us better people and we've enjoyed the support
of family and friends as we have traveled through our journey of life. Its been good to
see people from the now distant past over the last couple months with the Reunion
Committee and I look forward to seeing others and hearing about their life stories at the
reunion.
Dave Miner ~ Charlotte, NC
After high school I was bouncing around between trade school, college and work. I was
married (for the first time) at age 27. One son from that marriage. It was short (6 or 7
years) compared to my second marriage that will be 22 years in July of 2007. My oldest
son graduated from Monte Vista in 1996, and is now involved in writing music and has
his own recording studio.
In my late twenties, I decided to join the army reserves, and was trained to be a medic.
That was fun for six years. In 1977 I was hired by PSA (later purchased by
USAIRWAYS) and spent 28 years working for them as a machinist, and later as an
aircraft & power plant technician. I worked in San Diego for 14 years, 2 years in
Pittsburg, 11years in Charlotte, N.C. 1 year in Los Angeles. I Retired from USAIRWAYS
in October of 2005. I then went work for FEDEX, where I am now working in Los
Angeles. I was also involved in real estate for a few years as an agent/broker/investor.
We have a son that is 19 and in College, in San Diego. Our twin daughters that are 17
will graduate in June of 2007 and will also go on college in San Diego.
Our daughter Ashley was chosen to be homecoming queen, and her twin sister Jenny
was chosen to represent her junior class in her junior year.
We plan to move back into our house in Temecula in June of 2007. It has been
interesting to live in and travel to different parts of the country, but we are really looking
forward to settling down in southern California again.
