Go Monarchs!!!!
Peggy Gramoy ~ Oklahoma
After graduating from Monte Vista, I attended Grossmont JC, then transferred to and
graduated from, San Diego State with a “you-want-fries-with-that?” degree in Liberal
Arts. I had planned to be an English teacher (thank you Mr. Moore) but midway through
college I took a summer job at IBM that turned into a long-term career. I was intrigued by
the machines and the technology and feel lucky to have been involved in the industry
from the time when a mainframe computer could fill the Monarch gym to when that same
processing power could fit on a key chain.
I married my (first and only) husband Al in 1978 and we started our family with his 3 kids.
Then we quickly added 2 more of our own. Lisa is the Membership Director at La Jolla
Beach and Tennis Club, her husband Bill is an executive with North Island Credit Union.
Leslie owns her own marketing firm and her husband Conan is the Director of Junior
Tennis at La Jolla Beach and Tennis. They are the parents of our only grandchild, Blake
who is now a year and a half old. Amy is a teacher/administrator at a charter elementary
school in the San Diego Unified School District. Nick is an Account Exec with UPS. Matt
works for SDG&E and is a senior at SDSU. His fiancé Heather is the office manager for a
law firm in Old Town. All of them live in San Diego and though we’ve moved away, we do
get back for frequent visits.
My years at IBM began in the administrative offices then segued to sales. I started out
selling manual typewriters, worked my way through the years and the product line and
ended up managing contracts and customer relations. I retired from IBM in 1992 and
then worked at a series of jobs that allowed me to spend more time with my kids. I got my
Realtor License and was a mortgage loan officer for a few years. I got an emergency
teaching credential and did substitute teaching for a couple of years. And I worked for a
couple of other computer companies until Al retired from his job in Governmental Affairs
and International Projects with SDG&E in 1998.
Al and I started collecting antiques nearly 30 years ago (1800’s Americana mostly) and
we have traveled all over the United States looking for goodies to add to our collection.
We’ve met a lot of terrific folks and had some wonderful experiences along the road.
The traveling and restoration keep us busy, and it is a whole lot more fun to play around
with the “toys” than to sink our money into the stock market.
We lived in and around Spring Valley until 2002 when we decided sell our house and
move “to the country”. We were thinking somewhere in East County….but just couldn’t
find what we wanted. We traveled around the country in our motor home for nearly two
years, bought a place in Las Vegas as a temporary landing spot and then.…well, does
anybody remember the Bancroft Elementary school play when we did “Oklahoma!“? It’s
a good thing I remembered the words to the song because, much to our surprise, that’s
where we landed.. We live out in the country, six miles from a little town (the size of
Jamul), 20 miles from a little bit bigger town (the size of La Mesa), and 80 miles from a
city (about one third the size of San Diego). We love the peace and quiet, our yard is
populated with birds, deer and assorted critters. I grow (some of) my own herbs and
vegetables and make wild blackberry jelly. And the people around here are just great. A
traffic jam consists of two pick-up trucks at the 4-way stop in town and road rage is when
each one vigorously waves to the other to go first. I’ve discovered that chiggers and
poke salad are real and that ”y’all” is a very useful word. I miss my family, the mall, and
good Mexican food. I DON”T miss traffic, graffiti, and big mortgage payments. Life is
good
