Charlotte Clark Simkins ~ Crawford, CO
Hello fellow Monarch’s… looking forward to the reunion!
After graduation I attended Grossmont College for 2 years, married a 1962 Monarch,
Tom Hurley, but later divorced. I worked at Sea World a couple of summers, then
worked as a dental assistant for a few years before moving into office work as I liked
it better. Remarried in 1972 to a Helix graduate. We moved to Placerville in Northern
California in 1978, divorced in 1982. Worked for a couple of Real Estate offices as an
office assistant for 6+years, remarried in 1983 and worked with my husband Don in
commercial landscape construction until I started my own business. In 1985 I started
from “scratch”... a turf irrigation wholesale supply house. After renting warehouse
& yard space for a couple of years, Don and I purchased land and built our own
14,000 sq. ft. office/warehouse building as an investment and to house the business.
In 1991 I sold the “business only” to a large Turf Irrigation Company out of the bay
area. They took over in my old location and are still there to this day (with a name
change or two). In 2000 we sold our office/warehouse building in California as it
was just to far away to manage properly.
Upon selling the business, in 1991, Don and I moved to Crawford, a rural town on the
western slope of Colorado. The town of Crawford has about 300 people with another
300 in the surrounding area. For a few years Crawford’s claim to fame was the home of
“Joe Cocker’s Mad Dog Ranch Fountain & Cafe” plus Crawford is the gateway to the
North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The café has since
closed but Joe still has a home in the area. I have been involved in various volunteer
groups around the area and served a term as President of our local Chamber of
Commerce.
Crawford is 80+ miles to the nearest large city of Grand Junction. As you can see from
the pictures…we claim a bunch of natural beauty as well as lots of wildlife. Over the
years we’ve seen lots of Deer and Elk plus Coyotes, a Bear, a Mountain Lion,
numerous Badger, a couple of Porcupine, some Raccoon and of course a Skunk or two.
Besides the local wildlife ….. I had some critters of my own as I raised sheep and goats
for 12 years but decided to give them up in 2005 so we could do some traveling. Of
course there have been the children of my life….our Llasa Apso’s … “Sky King” and his
sister Penny” plus the ranch dogs Ginger and Chico….and about six cats.
Don stays home and keeps up on all the things around the place. He is continually
building as this has been a do-it-yourself project. I am self employed and keep busy
doing basic office work and bookkeeping part-time for a couple of small businesses in
the area.

Greetings Monarchs of the class of '66
My husband David and I and our two sons spent many years wandering around the
country as a Navy family, and also I'm very happy that I had the chance to travel
overseas...to 15 countries in all. No matter what happens, I can always say that I
danced with a gaucho on the Pampas of Argentina. I worked for many years as an ESL
teacher and also medical interpreter, and although I've retired from teaching, I'm now
working on a home-based business, developing a line of soaps called "Heavenly
Roses".
David and I have three grandsons in addition to our 2 sons Dave Jr. and Rob. I enjoy
Yoga and meditation, and I've been a member of PETA since 1989.
All in all, we feel very blessed, but it's time to come home. I've traveled so much that I
don't really want to travel ever again. David and I are looking forward to those precious
Sunday afternoons in Balboa Park. I've traveled to 15 countries and 45 states, but I
never found anyplace that took the place of home.
I wish you all the best at the reunion and always.
